What is Lent?

JessiPastor's Blog

So what is Lent?  Simply put, it is a time of spiritual preparation. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and goes until the day before Easter. The word lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means ‘spring’ and also relates to the number 40. Lent is the 40 days of preparation for Easter. Forty is a significant number throughout the Bible. In the great flood it rained 40 days and 40 nights. Moses spent 40 days and 40 nights on Mt. Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments and led his people through the wilderness for 40 years. The prophet Jonah foretold that an unrepentant city of Nineveh would be destroyed in 40 days and the prophet Elijah journeyed for 40 days … Read More

Hospitality to the Stranger

JessiPastor's Blog

Earlier this week I was doing my Life Journal Bible Study and trying to listen for God. I was struck by one of the passages that I read that morning.  It was the last chapter in Acts – Chapter 28. It is right after the ship, which the Apostle Paul was on, had wrecked in the storm. All of those aboard were close enough to land to be able to make it to the island called Malta. John Wesley

We are midway through the seven-week sermon series where we are looking at our history as a Methodist Church. We have been using Adam Hamilton’s book Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived It. John Wesley was the founder of Methodism, though he never intended to start a new denomination. He gave his heart completely to the Lord and God used him in mighty ways. The Great Revival of England, that carried over to America, was in big part because of God working through Wesley. So hopefully by studying Wesley’s life we can learn ways to draw closer to God and revive the faith of our church, community, nation and the world. Allow me to share just a few of the many … Read More
